On December 15th Pinky performed
an absolutely flawless seventy-minute
set at the TUC Club in Tokyo backed
by her "boys" Kiyoshi Morita and
Masahiko Taniguchi, before an adoring
and packed house, several of whom
had even carted along their precious
(upwards of a thousand dollars each)
copies of Pinky's eponymously titled
1954 10 inch Vantage LP for her
signature. She also sold dozens of her
new CD "Speak Low." Quite an
evening! It was the 4th appearance out
of five during her 11-day visit to Japan.
The recorded results of her all-Sinatra
program at TUC will be released in
April 2007 on SSJ Records.
Her new "Speak Low" CD is everywhere
in Tokyo. You can't miss it wherever
you go, including HMV Stores, Disk
Union, and the still-vital Japanese
Tower Records. But the nicest surprise
came when Pinky undertook some
shopping after a visit to the Tokyo
Tower, and she went in the largest
non-chain record store in the city only to
hear her "Speak Low" CD being played
on the store's sound system. system.

By December Pinky will have had three CDs
released in Japan this year: a first time CD issue
of her 1958 Argo album "The Lonely One,"
a reissue, with bonus track, of her 2002 CD
with Richard Rodney Bennett, "Rain Sometimes"
and a first time release of her 1983 "live"
concert tribute to Johnny Mandel, with pianist
Lou Levy and bassist Bill Takas. That CD will
also include a bonus track of Pinky
accompanied by Levy and Johnny Mandel
singing the Bergman-Bergman-Mandel song
"Take Me Home" AND, most auspiciously,
she has been invited to Nihon next year to perform
at the 25th Anniversay celebration of the
Frank Sinatra Society of Japan. 2005 has been
a banner year for Pinky Winters in Japan!
~~~
The U.S. edition of Pinky's most recent CD,
Rain Sometimes, is now out-of-print, but
the good news is that it is now available in
a Japanese import, released 8/24/05, with
a great looking cardboard LP facsimile
sleeve, new notes, in Japanese, by jazz critic
Keizo Takada and with: A bonus
Winters/Bennett track, "The Lamp is Low,"
which was not available on the U.S. edition.
Available through CDBaby.com and Amazon.com
